PIERA is the name of the dark electronic - synth-pop duo formed by singer/songwriter/producer, Piera Klein and songwriter/producer Micah Plissner. The video for Unraveling sees the LA-based duo confront the dark emotional landscape of a broken relationship seemingly without hope of redemption.
In the times of COVID-19, Unraveling is nothing if not relatable. With an instantly catchy song built upon classic synth-pop and new wave sounds such as Depeche Mode, Cocteau Twins and New Order; and a video inspired by visual artists such as James Turrell and Zaha Hadid, PIERA looked to connect the neo-futuristic production with the song’s themes of loneliness and emotional isolation. Utilizing a minimalist aesthetic, unburdened by flashy set designs and props, the video feels both modern and timeless – devoid of elements other than light, hardware, clothing and humans. The stark-yet-entrancing video is enhanced by the song’s intricate production - icy synthesizers feel right at home (and sound amazing) in this cold, spaced out landscape.
About Piera Klein:
Piera Klein is an LA based artist, musician and activist. A Southern California native, she has always been fascinated by other worlds and sought to create her own. Since childhood she has been creating her own music, poetry and art, and eventually found her raison d’être in bringing them together. At five years old Piera sang on a children’s record and got her first taste of the music business. At 7 Piera started writing music on her dad’s acoustic guitar and any piano she could get her hands on -- at first playing completely by ear. By junior high she had started playing in local bands, etc. Piera went on to work with an Emmy Award nominated songwriting team needing a singer for placements. After the success of every song she sang being placed, Piera decided that it was time to launch out on her own as an artist — as a songwriter/producer, singer and performer. Inspired by truly independent musicians and artists, Piera decided to venture out into the uncharted waters of experimental sound design, lyricism and performance.
About Micah Plissner:
Micah was born on the upper west side of Manhattan. His Father, Martin Plissner was the national political director for CBS news. Micah was published in Village Voice magazine at 8 years old for a poem he wrote on the dark side of prep school culture. Twist and turns came as Micah was scouted by agents to be in various shows and commercials (he even booked on a Coors commercial that ran through the Super Bowl), but having realized that acting and the tv film culture wasn’t for him he enrolled in modern dance classes in Santa Monica and moved up to the pro classes, until a serious injury forced him to change course. He moved his way into the LA punk scene; where he eventually got signed as an artist, toured and charted in the top ten on the college radio charts nationally. That momentum caused him to gain the attention of major labels and appear in Rolling Stone Magazine, but Micah felt that the major label route was too commercial for his personal taste, therefore he carved out a role for himself in the industry as an independent musician and producer, which is still very much his beat today.
