Bay Area favorite Kaseem Bentley is releasing his debut stand-up album, Lakeview, on May 3rd, 2019, via Blonde Medicine. On Lakeview, we get to hear the high-energy storytelling of Kaseem at his most Kaseem. Rife with crowd work, sly observations and honesty, he pulls no punches as he gets to know the crowd filled with mixed race couples, techies, and a couple who have been married for 30 years. He’s got jokes for all of them, and while there is a clear thread throughout the album of how things have evolved in his hometown of San Francisco -- specifically the Lakeview neighborhood in which he grew up and for which the album is named-- detours abound. Bentley has a knack for digging his wingtip heels in and sharing strong opinions while disarming even those who disagree with him. It all adds up to give us something we all can agree on – Lakeview is an album worth checking out, no matter where you stand on the issues.
Kaseem Bentley was born and raised in San Francisco where he developed a no-holds-barred style of comedy, largely because of his hilarious parents (his father was a Muni driver with a snappy sense of humor and a hilarious storyteller; his mother, a social worker who was also funny and his sister, not so much).
For the last decade, Bentley has honed his skills at San Francisco’s open mics rowdy bar shows, and clubs, working his way through comedy rooms that have come and gone, enduring and developing a style that largely draws material from those in the crowd and that can sometimes be slightly antagonist.
More recently, Bentley has appeared on Comedy Central, Viceland, Nerdist, and Seeso. He’s also served as a staff-writer on Problematic with Moshe Kasher for Comedy Central and worked on the first season of Comedy Central’s The New Negroes.
The album art was done by the legendary Frank William Miller Jr. whose credits include Rockstar Games, Nike and album art for DJ Jazzy Jeff, Janelle James and Nore Davis to name a few. More on FWMJ here.
