Actor, Writer, and Comedian Kelly McCaughan is bringing her critically acclaimed hit Edinburgh Fringe Festival show Catholic Guilt to the SoHo Playhouse in NYC as part of The International Fringe Encore Comedy Series - a roundup of the best Fringe comics this season has to offer!
Does daddy Jesus's naked body on the cross make you wet? This show will. Seriously, there's water. So, put on your waterproof panties and get ready to unpack everything from losing your virginity in the most holy way, to abortion, to a bowling experience that leads to eternal damnation, and much more. Kelly's poignant and hilariously subversive show exposes the impossible standards of the Catholic Church. We will laugh. We will sin. Will we make it to hell together?
McCaughan describes Catholic Guilt as part clown, part theater, and part stand-up dealing with undoing the shame and guilt surrounding Catholicism from the female perspective. “We all get to play with ‘sinning’ in real time and it’s very naughty… a very cathartic and thrilling experience for everyone involved (and you WILL be involved).”
Using ‘write what you know’ as a guide, McCaughan took a subject she knows a lot about from her own Catholic upbringing and schooling. She knew it would be provocative and thought-provoking, and she knew it would be hilarious because she kept making herself laugh.
It has worked - Along with two sold-out runs at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Catholic Guilt has toured nationally to The Elysian Theater (LA), Union Hall (NYC), The Rockwell (Boston), Caveat (NYC), Fringearts (Philly), Theatre Exile (Philly), Benson Theater (Omaha) and has been gaining momentum ever since.
Says Kelly McCaughan “It has been the most fun I’ve ever had in my life!”
