Ali Sultan

BM014 - Ali Sultan - Happy To Be Here (2

Ali Sultan’s debut album, Happy To Be Here, is a look into the experience of a Yemeni-American immigrant and is rife with hilarious takes on everyday monotony as well as remarkable once-in-a-lifetime stories. For the former, check out Ali’s take on why big box retailers were so remarkable upon coming to the States (“Head over Heels for Walmart”). For the latter, how about a near-death experience and spiritual battle, pitting God against family (“Almost Dead but S.T.D.-Free”)? Ali tackles it all in this hour recorded in his hometown of Minneapolis. Among those in attendance is a special guest – Ali’s mother who introduces the album and who stays in the room during the show, getting called out from the stage by her son who checks her on some unanswered questions from his youth. It’s hard to say who has more fun – Ali, his mom or the crowd. Take a listen for yourself. It’s possible you’ll have more fun than any of them.

Winner of the 2018 “Best of The Midwest” contest at Gilda’s Laugh Fest and host of the Stories with my Muslim Mom podcast, Ali Sultan saw his first stand-up comedian when he moved to America from Yemen at the age of 15. He quickly grew the desire to go on stage but first he needed to learn English. In his first year he made local history by being the first person to win both Acme’s Funniest Person along with House of Comedy’s Funniest Person contests.

Ali went on to become the first professional Yemeni-American comedian to be featured on television when Kevin Hart hand-picked him to perform on Comedy Central’s Hart of The City. In 2018 he filmed two specials, domestically on Wanda Sykes’ Unprotected Sets (Epix) and in Dubai for the first half hour specials for Comedy Central Arabia. He was named both “Best Local Comic” and “2018 Artist of The Year” by Minneapolis City Pages.

A regular at the legendary Acme Comedy Company, Ali was named "Top 5 Comedian to Watch" by Growler magazine, one of “15 Arab Americans to Steal the Spotlight” by

ArabAmerica.com and has been featured by PBS and Funny or Die for his sketch work. He was also named one of the Biggest Comics in the Middle East by Esquire.
