DAYTROTTER'S BARNSTORMER 5 TOUR ADDS A BROOKLYN SHOW, AUGUST 27TH AT THE BROOKLYN BOWL (RE-LOCATED FROM THE GHENT, NY SHOW PREVIOUSLY SCHEDULED)

ACTS INCLUDE JBM, WE ARE AUGUSTINES, GUARDS, DOUG PAISLEY, DES ARK, CHRISTOPHER PAUL STELLINGAND THE LOOM

AUGUST 27TH- BROOKLYN BOWL
61 Wythe Avenue Brooklyn, NY 11211
5 pm SHARP start
$20 advance/$25 at the door

In Daytrotter's words...
"We are spending over a week in the country, out in the barns, but we got a sense that the Brooklynites weren't able to find rides to the upstate regions for a show in Ghent so we decided to bring it to them. And we'll all bowl together too. We made the last minute change to save the show and we hope people will come party with us. This will be the first time Daytrotter has been in the CITY since an infamous Red Door Building show almost 5 years ago during CMJ. Steve Lilywhite was there. We're hoping he'll be there again this time."

More about Barnstormer 5:
For the first time ever, Daytrotter's Barnstormer tour is leaving the Midwest. They're going to start their week on the East Coast, bringing the fifth installment of this run of dates to places where you can almost smell the Atlantic from the old barns they'll be setting up in. Ask any of the seasoned Barnstormers and they'll tell you that these are nights that you won't soon forget. These shows will take place in Amish country, near Woodstock, in the hometown of the Black Keys, close to the Big House and they'll occur in some of the most amazing settings imaginable -- horse barns housed on the property of a former insane asylum, barns on hundreds of acres of scenic land, barns that were formerly used to make cider in and even a barn where it's believed that cults worship. The barns alone are worth the price of admission, but the music is doubly good here as Daytrotter builds on the Barnstormer reputation that has brought acts like Dawes, Sondre Lerche, Local Natives, The Walkmen, Delta Spirt, Ra Ra Riot, Hellogoodbye, The Romany Rye, Suckers, Nathaniel Rateliff, Young Man, Guards, Snowblink, Paleo, Justin Townes Earle, Hands, ARMS, Mike & The Moonpies, Brooks Strause, Jonny Corndawg, Catfish Haven, Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin and more into hay lofts across America.

LA STRADA ANNOUNCES THE RELEASE OF THEIR FINAL RECORDINGS- 'IN MOTION' OUT TOMORROW, 5/3/11
Posted: May 2, 2011, 3:38 pm

La Strada started playing in 2007 in subway stations and tiny venues around Brooklyn, and after three years of recording and touring extensively through the US and Canada, the NYC orchestral pop favorites, known for their raucous shows and stunning instrumental arrangements parted ways in December of 2010. Before their untimely demise, the band was able to sneak back into NY's Serious Business studios and along with engineer Travis Harrison, they captured their final four tracks in the name of proper closure.

The result, released TOMORROW May 3rd, is In Motion - a digital-only EP that showcases all the magic of this unique sextet. Featuring their final touring incarnation: Daniel Baer on violin, James Craft on guitar, synth, accordion and vocals, Isaiah Gage on Cello, Ted Lattis on bass, guitar and vocals, Brady Miller on drums, and Devon Press on guitar, bass and vocals - In Motion was recorded live and on the fly in an effort to capture the band's manic live energy - as heard on the fuzzed out title track. The record also includes the crashing new wave blast "You Might As Well", buoyant live staple "Round and Round", and the beautifully triumphant folk of "Grow, Grow, Grow". In Motion is a final postcard from the band, a reminder of what they did, and a little something to keep with us as the world keeps spinning...

In Motion EP Track List:
1. In Motion
2. Grow, Grow, Grow
3. Round And Round
4. You Might As Well

CHICAGO FAVORITES, THE LAUREATES ANNOUNCE THE RELEASE OF THEIR 2ND FULL-LENGTH ALBUM, SPELLS, DUE OUT JUNE 28TH, 2011

Chicago rockers, THE LAUREATES announced that their second full-length album, Spells, will hit the streets June 28, 2011 on 12” vinyl on the band's own imprint, Funambulist Recording Company. In 2010, while the band recorded and released a cover every month as part of their “Year of The Covers” experiment, they also wrote and recorded another 10 original tracks with all the passion and grit expected of these Chicago favorites. Spells’ basic tracks were recorded by Johnathan Crawford on an 8-track tape machine at Catalyst in Chicago, and finished at Clown Town during the summer and fall.

The songs on Spells combine the crystalline, modern-pop sensibilities of their first album, There Are No More Gentlemen with the more echoed, vintage analog acoustics of the No Kontrol EP, producing an electrifying amalgam of the energies of their previous recordings. The new album finds the band straying from the 3-minute pop song formula on tracks such as “Life of Leisure” and “Moon Bitch,” the former starting out as a bouncy strut of sunshine-y pop before veering into darker psychedelic noise, and the latter closing out the album as a slow-burn vamp that brings to mind a marriage of Ziggy Stardust and Doolittle. The narrator on the menacing track, “Robbers” slips in and out of paranoid nightmares of both the sleeping and sleep-walking varieties while the drums shuffle along in concert with a Velvets-inspired guitar riff. But the record still retains The Laureates’ signature blasts of pop on songs like the anthemic “Changes, Etc.”, the angular “Don’t Lose Your Cool”, and the weary but bright-eyed “Oh, Delusion.”

THE LAUREATES, SPELLS

Production Credits:
Recorded by Johnathan Crawford at Catalyst and Clown Town. Mastered by Carl Saff at Saff Mastering.

Peter Gray - Drums, Vocals, Percussion

About Great Elk:

Great Elk's music is both disturbing and comforting, like meeting someone for the first time and discovering they know everyone you've ever loved. Their sound is the result of years of collaboration between primary songwriter Paul Basile, a New York native, and guitarist Patrick Hay, a Virginia transplant. Basile’s visceral, world-weary vocals and the lonesome wails of Hay’s guitar coalesce into a sound that is sometimes soothing, sometimes clamorous, but always engaging.

After the release of their debut, self-titled EP in June 2010, Great Elk performed a string of hugely successful local performances at Mercury Lounge, Rockwood Music Hall (Stage 2) as well as a packed show at The Living Room in December. The record release garnered attention from the likes of Paste Magazine, Magnet Magazine, The New York Post and The Wall Street Journal, among others.

2010 also saw Great Elk play their first official CMJ Music Marathon Showcase and go on their first full band tour. At the year’s end Great Elk found themselves on several year end lists including the “Top 20 albums” at Pop Headwound and Sweet Tea Pumpkin Pie, and they were selected as #3 on The Deli Magazine’s top emerging Alt-Folk artists in New York City.

On this new set of releases the band has taken a simpler and more collaborative approach to recording than on their previous release. Two members of the band (Bryan Trenis and Tommy Harron) are professional audio engineers by day which has allowed Great Elk to put these songs together entirely on their own, from basic tracking to mixing and mastering. The three original songs they’ll put out in February are long time fan favorites that Basile wrote while still living in Alaska.

The release of the singles is partly an effort to give these songs the treatment they’ve never gotten in the studio and to share them with fans before the band delves into recording a full length LP of new material, which they hope to release before the end of 2011. The highlight of the singles for many fans will be the tender “My Favorite One”, which was produced with the help of Casey Shea. The set of singles is rounded out by Great Elk’s somber take on the Springsteen classic, “Dancing in the Dark”.

Great Elk is Paul Basile, Patrick Hay, Bryan Trenis, Tommy Harron and Adam Christgau.

Praise for Great Elk

"With an EP four years in the making and a solid lineup, the band has started to garner attention for its gritty folk sound and impassioned performance."- NY Post

“Vibrations,” from Great Elk’s self-released, self-titled EP (out June 22), layers acoustic strumming with echoey electric guitar. And it’s Basile’s voice that’s most revealing and best characterizes the song. His gritty vibrato lends style and soul to his lyrics."- Magnet

"Led by Paul Basile and Patrick Hay, Great Elk managed something that I have seen few times in a live performance. They, and their band, produced a certain equilibrium between a harmony that engulfs and then, effortlessly, fulfils your want for pace and passion, at precisely the right time."- Wild Honey Pie

LISTEN TO THE SINGLE, "SOPHISTICATED THIGHS"

New Haven’s renowned label, Safety Meeting Records proudly announces the release of Fake Babies’ debut LP, We Started Blues due out February 18th, 2010. After three years of New Haven’s avant-electronica group finding a place at the core of the New England dance party scene, they’re poised to release 11 original tracks, drenched in DIY attitude and dirty soul beats.

Fake Babies was born from the soft pink minds of Justin Roberts and Robert Nuzzello Jr. in the summer of 2007. After spending the first year exploring new sounds to trigger their buried emotions, the original Babies were joined by Gary Velush and Jay Sirianni to live and breathe the massive sound that Fake Babies is today.  Together they provide explorative dirty soul for the living and barely living in the east coast of little ol' America, just waiting for the rest of the world to hear and understand. When standing still, Fake Babies reside in New Haven's premier DIY venue, The Submarine, where they sporadically host touring and local acts as well as deeply bangin' dance parties. Babies have shared the stage with Yeasayer, Indian Jewelry, Light Asylum (DJ), These Are Powers, Nite Jewel, Kingdom (DJ), Suckers and Dead Meadow.

After three years of recording and touring, NYC orchestral pop favorites, La Strada, known for their raucous shows and stunning instrumental arrangements announced that they will be parting ways as of December, 2010. James Craft announced to the band that he needs to move on to different goals and priorities that would exclude involvement in La Strada, and the rest of the band met Craft's announcement with supportive acceptance.

Founder and lead singer James Craft said: "I've loved being in La Strada, but for now I need extended time away from the scene and want to work on something new." Devon Press, multi-instrumentalist and co-writer agreed saying, "this is probably one of the most amicable breakups in history and we all still love each other very much and will probably continue to work together in some capacity." The newest member to join the La Strada ranks, cellist Isaiah Gage said, "I'm so thankful that I got to not only play such great music in the short time I was in the band, but more importantly meet such great friends."

La Strada still has plenty of activity planned between now and the official split on December 1st, with plans to record their new songs for release, and play a final show on November 20th at The Rock Shop.

The band has a message for friends and fans of La Strada:

"From the very bottom of our hearts and souls we want to thank every one of you that came to see us play and supported us these last few years. We all feel extremely blessed to have such wonderful fans; we'll never forget you!"

About La Strada....
Formed in early 2007, Brooklyn band La Strada has quickly made a name for itself with raucous, foot-stomping shows. The quintet- James Craft, Devon Press, Ted Lattis, Brady Miller, and Daniel Baer- sports a grand yet playful sound, and the live lineup follows suit, expanding to include additional strings and horns. The band released a self-titled EP in 2009 on Ernest Jenning Record Co., the NYC label that also released La Strada's debut full-length, New Home, on April 20. Inspired by a year of extensive tours and shows, New Home- produced by Kyle "Slick" Johnson (Cymbals Eat Guitars, Modest Mouse, Fischerspooner)- took the EP's clever, eclectic sounds and injected them with the intensity of a live performance.

As anyone who's seen the band's shows can attest, La Strada has been doing more than just taking mental notes on how to be spirited- it's starting to write the book on lighting up stages with a spectrum of international colors. The group toured much of North America with groups like Bowerbirds and Canada's Hey Rosetta! and Cuff the Duke.

DAVE BECK Announces New LP, Shows In The Midwest and Album Release Show in NYC
Posted: October 4, 2010, 9:19 am

LISTEN TO "MISSISSIPPI" FROM STRANGER HOMES

Dave Beck is an Iowan, born and raised, who has found his way into the heart of the Brooklyn song-writing scene after traveling across the nation, studying and playing music. He spent one year in Hollywood attending guitar school at Musician’s Institute which he decided was more like the School of Rock meets the 13th grade than a college. Beck’s time there was both productive and strenuous when it began to demand 10 hours a day, turning the joyous act of songwriting into a constant demand. After he experienced a stress injury piled on an old shoulder injury from high school, he officially became a guitar school dropout.

From there he headed to Iowa City where he went to shoulder rehab and the University of Iowa, a Mid-western oasis for writers, musicians and liberals. He worked at Mickey’s Irish Pub, and started writing songs again. He carved out his own major, graduated, and escaped the Midwest once again.

Dave Beck’s first song ever written was for a class project about parenting called “Growth and Development” and this little ditty made him realize he could be writing songs instead of doing projects. He started some high school bands, Cam’s Dream and Degrees of Freedom, which were “real good times” in his words. But these days the show is mostly Dave Beck and his guitar gracing the stages of New York. Brooklyn’s Local Correspondents songwriting collective boasts him as an active member and he can be caught at the occasional Bar 4 Tuesday night open mic, but he’s gearing up for a tour out to the Midwest in support of the October 26th release of Stranger Homes as well as some shows on his home turf in Brooklyn and NYC.

ON TOUR:
Thursday, Oct. 7- GRAND RAPIDS, MI- ArtPrize Festival
Friday, Oct. 8- IOWA CITY, IA- Gabes
Saturday, Oct. 23- ROCK ISLAND, IL- Speakeasy

Sporting the long hair and scruffy beards of their musical forefathers, The Sheepdogs create old school rock and roll that moves and grooves. Taking their cues from the Allman Brothers, Creedence, Humble Pie and the Stones, these prairie boys have a sound that is completely faithful to their 70s rock roots, while remaining thoroughly original and fresh. Powerful vocals, a twin guitar attack, stacked harmonies, moody keys and steady grooves all blend together to form an engaging batch of originals. After securing the reputation as the most exciting band to see in their hometown of Saskatoon (and being voted favourite local band by the readers of Planet S magazine), The Sheepdogs have taken their show on the road, touring from coast to coast in Canada and down into the US.

Halifax gloom popsters Dog Day have de-evolved. Partners Seth Smith and Nancy Urich are returning to the road, this time as a two piece, taking along a fresh batch of songs with the goal of recording a new album at the finish line. The new sound is made up of guitar, drums and vocals, leaning back toward the bands earlier, minimal, pop-punk debut, Thank You. The duo will be playing SappyFest as well as the ALL CAPS Fest, sharing the stage with pal Rick White (Eric's Trip) who produced their most recent release, Elder Schoolhouse. The Toronto Star hails the band as "...the most exciting Canadian act of the moment." After hearing the band's previous offering, Concentration (Outside Music), seminal music site Coke Machine Glow exclaimed, "Behold anew, motherfuckers, the future of indie rock..."

THE THIRD RAINBOW QUARTZ RELEASE FROM ONE-MAN-BAND LEADER, DEAN WELLS
IN STORES AUGUST 24, 2010

THIS TIME WELLS MOVES HIS LO-FI POP GEMS FROM THE
BEDROOM TO THE STUDIO WITH NY PRODUCER/DRUMMER, MATT LEMAY

The Capstan Shafts announce today that their third LP to be released on Rainbow Quartz is poised for an August 24 release. After 2008's Fixation Protocols was released to rave reviews, songwriter Dean Wells (the one man in this one-man-band) decided to make the jump from the bedroom to the studio, recording at Marc Alan Goodman’s Strange Weather Studio in Brooklyn, NY with producer/drummer Matt LeMay. The duo emerged with a collection of charming pop songs, as smart and catchy as ever. But this time, the songs sound as good on the album as they do when you (inevitably) re-play them in your head.

RAINBOW QUARTZ RECORDS PROUDLY ANNOUNCES THE RELEASE OF THE GRIP WEEDS’ NEW DOUBLE ALBUM, STRANGE CHANGE MACHINE OUT AUGUST 3RD, 2010
Posted: June 29, 2010, 5:34 am
“Sparkling, insanely catchy psyche-pop”: The Grip Weeds are a critically acclaimed Psychedelic Rock /Power Pop quartet consisting of brothers Kurt and Rick Reil (on drums and guitar respectively), Kristin Pinell (guitar) and Michael Kelly (bass). Together, The Grip Weeds take elements like the harmonic purity and psychedelic spirit of ‘60s rock and the visceral power of early ‘70s classics into the modern era. Surrounded by their vintage equipment, this talented four-piece band records slices of perfect, radio-friendly guitar-pop, psychedelic enough to appeal to record junkies and Sixties-retro fans, but edgy enough to fit into a modern rock set.

Strange Change Machine, the new Grip Weeds double CD/LP is a 24-song tour de force that sees the band perfecting their classic sound while also diving into uncharted musical territory. While the debate regarding the validity of the double album continues, the format has allowed the Grip Weeds to deliver the boldest recording of their career. Strange Change Machine was written and recorded while the band was ensconced in reissue projects (2007’s reworking of their debut House Of Vibes Revisited, and the 2008 Little Steven Van Zandt-sponsored compilation Infinite Soul: The Best Of The Grip Weeds) and outside studio production jobs (Singer/Drummer Kurt Reil recorded three albums with the legendary Smithereens, as well as three solo projects by Smithereens lead singer Pat Dinizio, among his other studio work).

Restoring belief in guitar rock, guitarists Kristin Pinell and Rick Reil turn in career-defining performances, while drummer Kurt Reil's controlled chaos is the perfect foil for Michael Kelly's aggressive yet melodic bass work. The other major weapon in The Grip Weeds utility belt is their vocal harmonies. Whether the band is belting out intergalactic rock ('Speed Of Life'), a lilting west coast groove ('Be Here Now') or a folk ballad that fuses the Peter Green and Lindsey Buckingham eras of Fleetwood Mac ('Mistress Forest'), the vocal harmonies add an emotional depth to the already warm tones and catchy hooks. Whether it’s the brutal Garage Rock of 'Don't You Believe It', the Manchester Beat tale of a bridge jumper 'Mr. X', or acoustic guitar/flute instrumental 'Love In Transition', the band deftly jumps from style to style without losing their identity or giving the listener whiplash. The Grip Weeds have also reinvented the Todd Rundgren classic 'Hello It's Me'. While the original is a much-loved 1970s classic, The Grip Weeds replace the song's slicker elements with Nuggets-style grit.

Meanwhile, The Grip Weeds lead the D.I.Y./indie rebellion on Strange Change Machine with every inch of this album- from the writing and performing down to the recording, engineering and artwork - created by The Grip Weeds and the Grip Weeds alone. With Strange Change Machine, The Grip Weeds have aimed their vision for rock and roll beyond the reach of the telescopes, so grab hold and enjoy the ride.

More About THE GRIP WEEDS
Brothers Rick and Kurt Reil grew up playing music together in Central New Jersey and their strong musical and familial bond ultimately gave birth to The Grip Weeds. Both share singing and songwriting duties and their close-knit harmony vocals recall those of the Everly Brothers or The Byrds. A capable singer, Kurt’s explosive drumming resembles that of a young sober Keith Moon, while Rick alternates between crashing power chords and delicate 12-string riffs. Female lead guitarist Kristin Pinell proves that a woman can rock as intensely as anyone; her epic melodic leads draw inspiration from the likes of Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Brian May and George Harrison. Rounding out the foursome, Michael Kelly’s bass lines run from lyrical to thunderous.

“Bursting with terrific songs.” -USA Today

"The Grip Weeds have a palpable group chemistry that so many bands boast of but so few actually possess." –Magnet

"A Grip Weeds song is so distinctive and unique that it obliterates most pop pretenders, retro-mongers, and fetishists.” – All Music Guide

Band Members:
Kurt Reil: Vocals, Drums, Percussion, Guitars, Keyboards
Rick Reil: Vocals, Guitars, Keyboards, Percussion
Kristin Pinell: Guitars, Vocals, Flute
Michael Kelly (MK): 4, 5 and 12 String Basses, Vocals

GREAT ELK- EP RELEASE SHOW, WILD HONEY PIE BUZZ SESSION

BUZZsession: Further North - Great Elk from the WILD honey pie on Vimeo.

EP RELEASE SHOW- JUNE 24th- THE MERCURY LOUNGE

Great Elk's music is both disturbing and comforting, like meeting someone for the first time and discovering they know everyone you've ever loved. Their sound is the result of years of collaboration between primary songwriter Paul Basile, a New York native, and guitarist Patrick Hay, a Virginia transplant. Basile’s visceral, world-weary vocals and the lonesome wails of Hay’s guitar coalesce into a sound that is sometimes soothing, sometimes clamorous, but always engaging.

The band's self-titled, self-released debut EP, on sale June 22, 2010, at times recalls the sparse and haunting feel of Basile's solo record, Skeletons (2006), which was written and recorded during his 4-year stint as a sled-dog handler in rural Alaska. But on this set of recordings, joined by Hay and a top-notch rhythm section featuring Adam Christgau (Jenny Owen Youngs, Gregory and The Hawk) on percussion and Jon Estes (Rosewood Thieves) on bass, the songs trade some of their intimacy for lush and powerful arrangements.  Basile's gravelly vocals are driven to their natural edge and Great Elk is pushed away from its indie-folk roots into uncharted territory.

Recorded with Ian Love (Animal House Studios) and Bryan Trenis (Vacation Island Studios) in Brooklyn, and at a 190-year-old farmhouse in Vermont, mixed by Trenis and mastered by Jeff Lipton at Peerless Mastering in Boston, the EP will be supported by tour dates up and down the East Coast.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker Mark Becker, we find the six exhuberant young gents in a David Lynch-ian world of a long-forgotten resort haunted by a shovel carrying lady and an empty drive-in where an on-screen femme fatale is seen and then flickers out leaving everyone wondering whether her influence was real or imagined. La Strada shot the video in 8 different locations, all an hour or two north of New York City, over the course of two days – with a bare-bones crew of 6.

The Cush in NYC FRIDAY, APRIL 2nd- The Living Room
Posted: March 30, 2010, 6:49 am

The Cush is happy to announce the release of their third LP, Between The Leaves, poised for an April 20th release, surrounded by a few key dates for their NYC and Texas fans. In celebration of the release, they’re giving away a free mp3 of “The Vigilant Ones,” as well as unveiling the video for the same song. Their recent relocation back to Texas has proved to bring a solid and lush record full of their signature tape delay warmth with catchy melodies atop.

Gabrielle and Burette Douglas began recording Between the Leaves in January of 2008 in Texas. They recorded everything themselves, once again on their trusty old PC. Drums and basic tracks were recorded in the comfort of living rooms in East and West Texas for half of the album. After a May residency tour of the northeast, The Cush began recording the rest of Leaves back in Burlington at their remote yet cavernous rehearsal space. There, they took full advantage of the rehearsal space's late night silence and huge natural reverb. During the wee hours of the morning they were able to turn up loud and experiment with sounds with no worry about neighbors complaining.

The album took the rest of that summer and fall to complete before it was mixed with Mike Poorman in Providence and mastered with Pete Weiss in Athens, VT. The video for "The Vigilant Ones," is a psychedelic animated piece by the same artist who created their album art, PJ DeVilliers.

About The Cush....
Gabrielle and Burette Douglas have been making music together for more than 15 years, and nearly 'made it' with their first band, Buck Jones (1993-1999) during the Buzz Clip/Alternative Nation age, not unlike such hometown heroes as Tripping Daisy and the Toadies. Surrounding the band’s first two releases (The Cush and New Appreciation For Sunshine) the band not only toured extensively across seas, but was also invited to play several key opening slot gigs including shows with Cat Power, Broken Social Scene, Deerhoof, and the Fiery Furnaces and Stars (to name a few). While the band spent years in Burlington, Vermont, the inspiration from the Vermont countryside really took over as The Cush spent four years handcrafting the space-cadet country and psychedelic pop of their second record, New Appreciation For Sunshine. A DIY experience through and through, the album was recorded throughout Vermont, from drum tracks at a friend's loft (a former Masonic lodge) to vocals in a Richmond library room rife with natural reverb. Now that The Cush is poised for their third effort's release, they have some travels ahead. When the band sets out for the East Coast, they’ll be sure to impress fans with their unforgettable live energy at The Living Room on April 2nd.

No Kontrol EP- The Laureates:

CandyDinner.com-

Chicago 4-piece, The Laureates announced today that they are releasing their No Kontrol EP, out today, as a free download. The release date had been set for quite some time, but in a somewhat recent switch in frame of mind, they decided not to charge a cent for the exciting collection of 5 original songs.

Chad Preston explained the band's motivations for giving their music away for free: "We had a great time making this record with friends, and we just wanted to remove another barrier to getting our music out there so more people could hear it. We spent time but almost no money, so whether anyone pays us or not for this doesn’t matter. Just listen."

The No Kontrol EP, (Funambulist Recording Company), is The Laureates' 3rd effort, preceded by a 7" EP and a full-length album. It was recorded by John Crawford (Paul Cary, Tiger Bones, France Has the Bomb) in Chicago in fits and starts, July through October 2009. This 5-song collection tweaks the vintage rock and roll/pop sound of the band's debut full-length, There Are No More Gentlemen by adding a touch of noise and reverb-ed abandon. While this might be a looser and wilder affair, the songs on the No Kontrol EP still betray their intention to try and melt cold, city hearts.

A Feeling Of Feeling, Moving Through Moving

La Strada's Daytrotter Session

Words by Sean Moeller // Illustration by Johnnie Cluney // Sound engineering by Patrick Stolley

It's as if the pipe smoke is engulfing us. It's of a sweet tobacco leaf, and it's rich with a kind of refined smell that makes you want to roll around in it, like a spearmint patch or a wild honey clover. It's the sophisticated scent of a man who's puffing contentedly in the study, with the hi-fi playing classical pieces, but there he is breaking out his mad scratching skills and mashing some Wolfgang Amadeus or even Meredith Wilson scores with the Decemberists or the Arcade Fire, making for a new sound that's summery and still something that he could choose to read to, if it were playing behind him, slightly lighter. It's the sound of young Brooklyn group La Strada, a five-piece that utilizes accordions and strings in big, big, big arrangements and couples them with the kinds of winning lyrics that lead music journalists into calling such bands a bunch of learned gents with a bent on literate indie rock and roll, and assuming like they do with Colin Meloy, that the members of the group go nowhere without their spectacles and a New York Times rolled up under their arms. There will be much made next week of the debut full-length from The Soft Pack, a California band that used to famously be called the Muslims, and rightfully so, but this group is just as worthy of the praise for a likeminded approach to classic pop songwriting and a groove that's impossible to deny. It gets the hitch out of your step and diminishes your inhibitions to the point where you just start feeling your forehead greasing up with sweaty residue, making your bangs drip with action. James Craft, the band's primary songwriter and lead singer, keeps his songs pumping with such great vigor and an astounding array of feeling - making everything on the band's excellent debut full-length, "New Home," sound as if it's bursting with passion and little squalor. It's a polished run of sentiment that sounds as if it's over the moon, sweeping milk-ily across the roaming heavens with heaves and hums of sparkling trails of kisses. "Wash On By" is an anthem to take to the streets, moving us to keep chopping up the distance and just bask in our desires, our hungers and our dreams. It feels like young hopes and getting wrapped up in the opportunity to just freak out and break away from dead days and stagnancy. Craft sings, "Can't find a woman to save me," as he's out there with the crowded streets and feeling like a small and insignificant figure, though still sensing that he's got something special coursing through. It's a song that epitomizes so much about a group that has potential to do some gigantic things.

The Laureates announce NO KONTROL EP Release AND Cover Of the Month
Posted: January 19, 2010, 10:33 am

The No Kontrol EP, to be released February 16, 2010 via Funambulist Recording Company, is The Laureates' 3rd effort, preceded by a 7" EP and a full-length album.

The band is gearing up for a string of dates in support of the release, including a Chicago CD release show at The Hideout, on Friday, February 26th, as well as a swing out to the East Coast in April.

Besides the exciting release of No Kontrol, The Laureates have vowed to record and release a cover song once a month, for free download. The songs will be posted on the 1st of each month at http://www.laureatesmusic.com. To kick off this exciting year of adaptations, the band presents "I Can't Stand It" by The Velvet Underground.

The Laureates cover "I Can't Stand It" by The Velvet Underground:
http://www.laureatesmusic.com/downloads/music/Covers/I_Can%27t_Stand_It.mp3

About The Laureates
The Laureates' sound came together over a two-year span beginning in late 2005 after Chad independently wrote and recorded a self-produced lo-fi "album" that was exciting enough to inspire him to go out and find people to perform the songs. He first found Crawfie (bass) and Pete (drums). Adam (guitar) joined in February of 2007. The resulting music recalls traces of teenage years spent listening to the underground rock of the '80s and '90s and classic rock and roll heard on the radio in dad's car. The songs seem to pretend that Pixies and The Replacements were contemporaries of The Beatles or The Who or if the British Invasion never stopped but only changed uniforms.

DARK DARK DARK TO TOUR WITH WHY? --7" OF REMIXES BY ODD NOSDAM AND DOSH WITH DIGITAL TRACK REMIXED BY TOM INHALER
Posted: August 31, 2009, 8:36 pm
-FREE MP3s-"JUNK BONES" ODD NOSDAM REMIX-

Dark Dark Dark are from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Their debut album, The Snow Magic, was released in October, 2008 (PopMatters called it "A strong debut"). In the past year, the band has played over 150 shows, spanning the entire US, France, Belgium, Italy and Canada. Before they return home to record their next album, they have been enlisted by the band WHY? to open 11 shows on their US tour this October, stopping off in Worcester, Milford (New Haven), Boston, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Ann Arbor, Chicago, Madison, Minneapolis, Denver and Salt Lake City.

To commemorate, Supply And Demand Music will be releasing a limited edition 7-inch (also available through digital outlets), featuring remixes by Odd Nosdam and Dosh of two tracks from The Snow Magic.

Odd Nosdam puts his signature spin on crowd favorite "Junk Bones", filling the tune with dirty breakbeats and nasty bass, while Dosh's remix of Snow Magic closer "All The Things" floats in and out, a simple loop growing and changing out of control. As a bonus, each copy of the 7-inch allows you to download an additional psych remix of "Colors" by S&D label head Tom Inhaler.

OH, and did we mention the artwork? Christian Rex van Minnen's "Manfungus Series 1.1" is beautifully grotesque, and the perfect complement to these reworked tracks.

Dark Dark Dark's tour with WHY? begins September 27th, and the Remix 7-inch is released October 6th, 2009 on Supply And Demand Music.

HYMNS Backing DANIEL JOHNSTON- Daytrotter Session

Daniel Johnston Daytrotter Session, backed by Hymns

Aug. 3rd, 2009. Today, Daytrotter posted this session from SXSW 2009, part of the Daniel Johnston tour that Hymns opened and backed.

Here's Hymns' notes on the session:

"When we were first offered the Daniel gig, I was pretty shocked. My only real knowledge or memory was Casper off the kids movie, which I was obsessed with, and Kurt's T-shirt. But after playing with him and really learning the catalog I realized what a, and I hate this word, genius he really is. It's a real old school gig playing with him, as he calls out "numbers" on a whim and you have to be sharp as a knife to play with the guy. I look forward to hearing his new stuff and even more to playing with him more. "True Love" was my fantasy song to play with Daniel. We'd never done it on tour, but I mentioned it at 'trotter and he was into it. One of my all-time favorite songs."

SUPPLY & DEMAND MUSIC PROUDLY ANNOUNCES THE US RELEASE OF AUSTRALIAN ELECTRO-COUNTRY FEMALE DUO, ROYALCHORD'S THIRD STUDIO ALBUM

THE GOOD FIGHT IS SLATED FOR AN AUGUST 25TH RELEASE, SURROUNDING U.S. AND CANADIAN TOUR DATES

What the Australian Press is Saying:
"Haider and Hiscox sing like a pair of winsome wallflowers, all soft and dark and hinting at revenge with kitchen knives." - Beat Magazine

"Big, reverby guitars; dramatic peaks and troughs; spaghetti Western-style, with tamales, a big pitcher of beer and a whiskey chaser"- FIVE STARS, The Big Issue

"A soothing exploration of the shadowy world where Morricone meets surf guitar."- Rip It Up

"The sound of Royalchord is evocative of wide open spaces, from the vastness of the desert sky to the lonesome reaches of the human heart." Queenscliff Music Festival

Hailing from Melbourne, Australia, Tammy Haider and Eliza Hiscox make the music of Royalchord. Starting out in 2001 playing dusty alt-country with a crew that at one point swelled up to 8 members, Tammy and Eliza now play primarily as a duo, replacing guitars with keyboards and band members with chopped drum breaks and sequenced bass lines. Their new record, The Good Fight, sees them combine electronics with their neurotic and melancholic sensibility, delivering songs that range from summer pop to funereal folk.

In 2001, the band recorded their debut album, I Gave You a Mountain, followed in 2003 by the EP Hug The Shadows. 2004 saw the beginning of a relentless schedule of traveling and DIY touring promoting their 2nd LP Nights On The Town, which Popmatters said "sounds like The Waifs hobo-ing through the out back." The song "Softly, I Leave You" from Nights was featured in Jerrycan, a film that won the jury prize at Cannes in 2008 and was also an official selection at Sundance.

The origin of The Good Fight can be traced back to late 2007, when Tammy and Eliza were living in Guatemala. They spent three nights in Livingston, a coastal town with a mix of European, African and Latin influence. A stolen purse and a trip on a motorcycle led to a group of locals assisting the duo and bringing them to a strange speakeasy, where much beer was drunk and many friends were made (neatly documented in the song "All Your Caribbean"). This experience awakened something in Tammy and Eliza, a new focus on their craft and desire to make it happen.

The warmth of Guatemala was a harsh contrast to Berlin, where the band moved to in the winter of 2008. Broke and not knowing a single word of German, the cold only deepened their feelings of isolation. The focus was still there however, and out of this intense loneliness came a realization - instead of posturing as an alt-country duo, writing songs about long lost loves that may or may not have existed, they needed to open up and truely reflect on their experiences, and embrace the new sounds that they had encountered in their travels. Using isolation as a tool, they moved once again to a village of 97 people in the south of France, and set out recording. With a stack of keyboards and pawn shop instruments, Royalchord redefined their sound and made their most personal record yet - dance music for the down and out.

Royalchord will spend 2009 touring the United States, Europe, and Australia. The Good Fight is released August 25th in the US on Supply And Demand Music.

EL GOODO ANNOUNCES "FEEL SO FINE" VIDEO

FILMED IN WELSH ABBEY RUINS, THE VIDEO TIES  HAUNTS OF THE PAST WITH VINTAGE FOOTAGE WITH FIERY RESULT

WATCH THE VIDEO FOR "FEEL SO FINE"

Today, Welsh pop wizards, El Goodo's video for the single, "Feel so Fine," hits the web. Filmed at an old Welsh abbey ruins site in the valleys of West Wales outside of Port Talbot, the birthplace of Anthony Hopkins and the city that inspired Bladerunner, the video was costumed by Marigold Costuming whose other claims to fame are costuming for Dr. Who and the Welsh Opera. It was directed by Mie Sorensen, who has worked for MTV, Nickelodeon and VH1 to name a few and has worked with Lionsgate Films for Saw and New Regency.

Unfortunately, while filming, an El Goodo member accidently caused a fire which interrupted the last parts of filming and almost burned down the rest of the abbey. The police were called by a local farmer and subsequently Miss Sorensen nearly spent the night in jail under suspicion of arson. Luckily, no serious damage was done, and hopefully all charges will soon be dropped. Nevertheless, the resulting video is clearly a thoughtful and inspired, fairly raucous celebration of the song.

"Pitch-perfect, undiluted by irony, Welshmen re-create the folk-pop ’60s, and if the Hollies sometimes made better albums, the Association never did."- Robert Christgau

"Coyote is the sound of a band that has perfected its sense of style, while at the same time spreading its wings.- Under the Radar

"I’ve had the advance for two months and have been playing it more than most other new releases.... Excellent stuff."- Dave DiMartino- Yahoo! Music

"Another old saying is that hindsight is 20/20, and for the most part the group has taken elements from the past to shape a sound capable of a promising future.-The Agit Reader

EL GOODO FEATURED ON NPR'S SECOND STAGE, AND KCRW TRACK OF THE DAY
Posted: February 10, 2009, 1:41 pm

SECOND STAGE: NPR:

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=99159118

It's easy to tell the Welsh band El Goodo is obsessed with retro, psychedelic sonic landscapes, even without hearing a single note of the group's music. A key track on El Goodo's self-titled 2006 album is called "Stuck in the '60s." The quintet recreates that vintage sound, in part, by using instruments and recording equipment leftover from the '60s, right down to the drum-kit and bass.

El Goodo's latest release, Coyote, is immediately catchy. The pulsing drum beat and brawny guitar riffs in the opening bars of "Feel So Fine" kick off the album with an impressive gusto. The entire album echoes many of guitarist Lewie's favorite artists, including The Velvet Underground, The Byrds, and The Doors. Backing vocals are taken from the Beach Boys school of rock, sung in carefully orchestrated group harmony.

Though the late '60s may be the main source of inspiration for Coyote, more contemporary comparisons can be made: In "I Can't Make It," the playful melodies and spoken lyrics sound as if they could have come from the early Gay Parade era of Athens pop sensation, Of Montreal.

After Super Furry Animals took notice of El Goodo's debut in 2005, the band has been building up their resume by touring in both the UK and stateside with acts like Beulah, Essex Green, and The Zombies. Coyote may be El Goodo's second album, but with such richly layered and intricate melodies, this is no sophomore slump.

KCRW:

One of the most promising bands in the city. Think Beirut and Neutral Milk Hotel with more focus on traditional Americana. -The L Magazine

La Strada has managed to create an impressive fanbase for themselves very early on, due to their uncanny ability to funnel the romance of old-world instrumentation through new world amplification. With soaring vocal harmonies, accordion, and string-driven melodies revved up on rock and roll, La Strada transports you to the hills of the Balkans, a street corner in Paris, and back home beneath a Brooklyn skyline. Frontman, songwriter and former aspiring astronaut, James Craft, was born in France and has also lived in Northern California, and Romania, and as a result, the band's folk ballads and fiery anthems are infused with a sense of great distance, invoking both nostalgia and awe.

After much anticipation from fans and the press alike, La Strada announces February 24th, 2009 as the release date of their self-titled EP for Ernest Jenning Record Co. The 6-song collection has captured the energy and intricate melodies of the band’s live performances which has already garnered them an accomplished following. From the show stopping, “Starling,” to the inspiring and driving melodies of “Flying,” and “Sun Song,” the band's introduction to the world is sure to please.

A month before the much-anticipated release of Welsh psychedelic wizards, El Goodo’s sophomore effort, Coyote (Grease Records), the band will release two singles on December 15th. “Feel So Fine,” the leading track on Coyote, is a stomp-along, guitar-driven anthem while “She Turtle,” a b-side available only as a single track, offers layer upon layer of melodic sing-song back-ups as it positively swoons around itself.

Hailing from inside the valleys surrounded by the majestic mountains of South Wales, five piece multi-instrumental group, El Goodo consists of the talents of Pixy, Jason, Lewie, Matty and Elliott. They were first noticed by the Super Furry Animals who, in 2005 picked up their first self-titled album and released it under their Placid Casual label and subsequently were their tour's opening act, introducing El Goodo as a band worthy of critical and mass appeal. They have received accolades from both their home isle and the United States, touted as Artist of the Month by Spin Magazine in 2005. Besides touring nationally around the UK with Super Furry Animals, El Goodo has graced the stage with heavy-weights such as The Zombies, Dead Meadow, Preston School of Industry, Beulah, Essex Green and the Keys just to name a few, solidifying their rise as psychedelic champions.

THE LAUREATES ANNOUNCE DEBUT LP RELEASE DATES- CHICAGO SHOWS
Posted: September 2, 2008, 12:09 pm
The Laureates' debut LP, There Are No More Gentlemen, to be released on November 11th by Funambulist Recording Company, was recorded with Mike Lust at Phantom Manor Recording in Chicago, December 2007 through March 2008. The songs marry the inherent hook-driven melody of The Creation and The Kinks to the drive and energy of Spoon and What Made Milwaukee Famous. The Laureates draw on 60's pop to make new sounds feel like old favorites while taking chances that leave no room for nostalgia. Recorded over the winter months with the renowned Mike Lust (Wilco, Chin Up Chin Up, Sweep the Leg Johnny), this 13-track release is a bold collection of melody-rich pop.

OCTOBER 23rd- CHICAGO- The Metro with Frightened Rabbit and The Spinto Band
